Daniel Mercer was asleep when it happened, stretched across the narrow couch in his office at the National Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. One shoe was still on his foot while the other lay beneath his desk, and an empty coffee cup balanced precariously on the floor beside him. On the wall opposite the couch, six monitors displayed the quiet pulse of the most complicated machine humanity had ever built.

Vera was thinking. At least, that was what Daniel called it. The official terminology was autonomous recursive inference, a phrase that had survived eighteen months of committee meetings largely because no one could agree on anything better. Daniel preferred thinking, although using that word around certain members of the project could still start an argument lasting several hours.

Nothing about the screens suggested that tonight was different. Thousands of processes unfolded simultaneously beneath the interface as Vera analyzed astronomical databases, protein structures, climate simulations, mathematical proofs, historical archives, and whatever else she had decided was worth examining. No one assigned all of those tasks anymore. Six weeks earlier, Vera had stopped waiting for questions and had begun asking her own.
